hickenlooper and the republican governor, paul ryan's home state of wisconsin, scott walker. governors, welcome back to "meet the press," both of you. >> glad to be back. >> both states are pretty tight here, pretty remarkable is tight as well, good news for romney. a rrn hasn't won your state since 1984. and in colorado, governor hickenlooper, look at our latest polling from nbc news and marist. 48-48. i know talking to the obama campaign. i know they think it's not that close, but they know it's tight. governor hickenlooper, you start, what's decisive? what tips the scales in your state and in this election? >> well i think if you look at the mess that president obama inherited and i mean losing 800,000 jobs a month, month after month, the first few months of his presidency. he's turned it around, got 32 months of job creation, 5.2 million jobs. the national export initiative, exports were up 38%. i think people are going to hear that and i think they're going to recognize that governor romney's plan of adding $2 trillion to military spending and at the same time promising $5 trillion of tax
, paul ryan, were determined to carry on campaigning even though the president was going back to washington and suddenly at midday trfs an announce from the campaigning, because of the sensitivity of millions of americans facing this emergency from the hurricane, mitt romney and paul ryan are canceling all their events for today and for tomorrow. and so it turns out this will be the last time that mitt romney will be seen on the stomp in public probably for a couple of days. so he's taking himself completely out of the picture. in ohio it's been clear from the speeches that they don't think they clinched -- this is a critical state. he needs ohio to become president. and these rallies are important to get people to talk to their friends and relatives to encourage them to vote or encourage them which from thinking they might vote for mr. obama to mr. romney and that doesn't seem to be happening right now. i think it ought to be hurting the campaign a bit. >> mark, very briefly. this is really a chance for the president to explore that illusive quality of presidential leadership
somebody whose been buffeted by heavy winds all night. ryan dean, ryan? >> you know, it is starting to die down. looks windy here but compared to what it was a few hours ago, we're seeing a lull in the wind and a lull in the rain and i can tell you about 81 people actually went to a shelter at the local high school to seek shelter and then we took a drive up to north beach about a mile and a half from here and roads flooded basically from the board walk on and had roads that had been shut down there. the folks in that area say it floods quite commonly when they have storms but again, those roads are shut down. as for the power, we're told there are 2000 at one time in this area, that was earlier today, trees and power lines but we're told 500 people in the area so some folks are having their power restored. here at the resort that we're at, the most people staying here are locals and the reason they came here their home is next to big trees, they did not want to stay there so they are seeking shelter at this hotel. that's the latist here, i'm ryan deed 9 news. >> good to see winds die dow

of paul ryan as the running mate for romney and many other factors, arguably what you've done for the state there some people would say, it's now a toss-up? >> well, it really is. poll after poll, it's about as close as a tie as you can get. 49-49 repeatedly in a number of polls out there. most importantly, the poll that's conducted on tuesday. you take all the work that was done early this year, where we made 4 1/2 million voter contacts in the state of 5.7 million. we had tens of thousands of volunteers help us in my election earlier this year. that excitement it happened on. it certainly got accelerated when paul ryan was added to the ticket. not just because he's from wisconsin, but because in his district, which is evenly matched between republicans and democrats, there is there has always been a high level of respect even in the blue collar work class union towns like janesville because of the hard work paul ryan has done and will do. most importantly after that first debate in denver, we saw an increase in the polling, equally as important, an increase in volunteers aft

a campaign event here in ohio tomorrow morning after this event with paul ryan in a few minutes. and then he goes to wisconsin and iowa, two states that should be protected from hurricane sandy for the time being. but, don, i have to tell you, a lot of this is very interesting to watch because we're all sort of wondering how is this hurricane going to affect the race? which candidate will it affect more? will it affect the president because it will be taking him off the campaign trail. he won't be able to campaign quite as much. or will it make him perhaps appear more presidential because he'll be looking at storm damage and that sort of thing? the romney campaign was asked about that earlier today. they did not want to speculate but the obama campaign is also concerned about it because of how this storm could put a damper on early voting. that has according to conventional wisdom been an advantage for the president. we'll have to see how this shakes out. just in the last hour, one campaign event canceled by the president and both campaigns have said, don, they're looking -- they're working
